In his first round match against Mikael Ymer, Richard Gasquet finally managed to beat the Swede who dominated him two weeks ago in Montpellier, but also here in 2020, also at this first round stage. He was physically fresher than a fortnight ago and used his lethal weapon, the backhand lift, to put his opponent to the sword. A break at 3-3 allowed him to secure the first set in his favour (6-4). In the second set, it was Ymer who managed to take his opponent's serve. But the Swede, ranked 75th in the world, never managed to get any further. He led 3-5, but after 1 hour and 43 minutes, he scored four games in a row to win 6-4 7-5.
In the second round, Gasquet will face a different challenge in the form of the tournament's number two seed, Andrey Rublev of Russia. This will be their first meeting.
